Travel Guide: Berlin

Graham Addinall

Famously once described by it's mayor as 'poor but sexy', Berlin is sprawling, ugly/beautiful, creative, exciting and yes, very sexy indeed.  A weekend there can leave you exhausted but always wanting more.  Airbnb has been banned due to local bylaws protecting the rental housing market but, for a similar experience, check in to Miniloft in Mitte where you can rent a small but beautifully designed studio and make-believe you live there.

Berlin has a huge art scene operating at every level but one of the most unique galleries is the spectacular Boros Sammlung - a private collection of cutting edge art housed in a converted WW2 bunker that has also served as a banana warehouse and a sex club.  Book well in advance as admittance is limited to small groups lead by very knowledgeable and entertaining guides.

Carrying on a tenuous art theme for dinner later, try culinary hotspot Dottir run by art world superstar Olafur Eliasson's sister who serves up beautifully presented food with an Icelandic twist.   Follow it up with a few glasses of wine at the charming Saint Jean bar and then… well, it's Berlin:  it's a crime to go home early…
